“As you can see from the photograph, I am one of the older members of the community. Coming to live here in the middle sixties was a very happy experience for me – at the time I knew no one and nothing of the area, but soon learned what a vibrant and interesting and talented community it was.Sadly, with the events of the last 30 years things have been in decline. Whatever happened to the Townswomen’s Guild, the Women’s Institute, the Rotary Club, The Lions, the Darby and Joan Club, the Drama Groups, the Ciné Club, the Social clubs with the visiting pop-stars of the day? Sadly, along with many of the public houses they are no-more. These were all meeting places for adults both young and old to socialise.I know that some other groups will have taken their place, but for many of the elderly without transport it becomes very difficult for them to take advantage of what is being offered, so, they remain trapped and isolated in their homes, particularly if they have no family nearby. The Burntwood Community Centre is striving to provide a service that will improve the quality of life for all members of the community, from ‘the cradle to the grave’, as they say, ……. but it will take time, money and help from volunteers. Come on in”!
